First half goal flurry kills off Mellows’ challenge

Three first-half Portumna goals ultimately proved the difference between the sides in this slow burning semi final played at Kenny Park yesterday. The champions are back once again in another final and it is difficult to look past them yet, as in recent rounds, they only impressed in fleeting spurts. Mellows will be disappointed with their own performance, as their disastrous start cost dearly. In fact, were it not for the Border men’s first half profligacy in front of goal, Mellows would have been far greater in arrears than the seven-point half time margin.

Galway hurling legends

A number of their predecessors had played for a famous College Road team in the 1890s, and their uncle Paddy played for Galway. They were given their first hurleys by Eddie Moore O’Flaherty from the Claddagh when they were very young children, so it was no wonder that Sean and Paddy and Jimmy would play for Galway and that Monica would become a very famous camogie player. Paddy and Monica have gone to their reward, but happily Sean and Jimmy are still with us.
